Blog 9: Lesson 1 Reflection

1. Positive Statement
What I'm most proud of from my presentation is that i made the time with only 25 seconds to spare and i talked throughout my whole presentation without stuttering or awkward pauses. Also that i rarely looked at my notes and papers while talking making a connection with the audience.

2. Questions to Consider
a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 1 Presentation (self-assessment)?

           I would give myself a P-

b.     Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 1 component contract.
Because i did everything the contract asked me to do except i gave out 2 examples of my printed resources instead of three, i did not say 1 verbally but i did have all 3 of my sources.

3. What worked for you in your Lesson 1?
I knew everything i was saying and lesson helped me know how i should present for my later presentations for my senior topic. This was a good first step

4.  (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your Lesson 1?
What i would of done is talk about my 3rd example of my printed resources.

October's Extra Blog Post

Well this month i've had both good news and bad news. The bad news is that my mentor Michael Bailey will be retiring soon as a choreographer and a dancer. This really got me bummed out because he was the first person to recognize my style of dancing and showed me what i can accomplish. He was the person who told me to audition for Marvels Dance Company and later become the best of the best. He was my mentor in a close level and i will miss him when he retires in December. The good news is that i will be having a new Mentor Tawnya Nguyen, who is a choreographer for Marvels Dance Co and a professional dancer in an adult team, Rogue Makers.

This Month we started to order the Company's outfit for the next competition. I didn't think it was important but it really matters what you wear on stage because it can influence what the audience thinks of you and your choreography. For example if you wore saggy pants and a long shirt and did ballet, the audience would not take you serious and would most likely not get the full art of what you are doing. Yet if you wore that same outfit to a crump or hiphop style choreography, you will make the audience feel the strong and "thug" tension you are trying to enforce on them. I cannot show the outfit right now for it is a secret until they show the team but i will gladly post it once they give out the new look.

Blog 8 - Research and Working EQ

1.  What is your working EQ?
What is the best technique to impact the public with performing arts?

2.  What is a possible answer to your working EQ? Please write the answer in thesis format.

I believe the best way to impact others with dance is by the choreography and music you choose to perform. The reason for this is because choreography is the language of the body and so that is how one can interact and communicate with others and show how they feel through dancing. Also music is a very important role for it can impact people in different ways. Examples are choosing an upbeat song would get people excited and jolly and would have fun watching you dance. While a lyrical, more mellow song would make people watch your technique and choreography with emotion and would allow others to feel how you feel.

3.  What is the most important source you have used that has helped you come up with an answer to your working EQ?

A source that helped me choose this answer was article 11, "Art in the Dark." Reason for that is because it showed how a good choreography and theme can really change peoples feelings in watching performing arts come to life in a magical way. The music was a big impact in this performance because of the how it made people feel.

4.  Who is your mentor, or where are you doing mentorship, and how does what you are doing relate to your working EQ?

My mentor is Michael Bailey, a choreographer and founder of Marvels Dance Company. I do most of my mentorship hours at Dellos Performing Arts Studio in Walnut City. What i do is learn how to teach choreography and choose which music to find for the next piece and i fill out paperwork and take class, etc. I believe this helps me with my EQ for i can get how someone who makes choreography chooses its music and makes students feel a special way.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

What i plan on doing for my 30 hours of work is taking classes and going to workshops for dance routines. Classes is when you go to a dance studio and you take a class on your preferred dance style while a choreographer teaches you for an hour. Doing a dance workshop is when you go to different parts of areas and cities to take class by an amateur choreographer. These are popular amongst the dance community because that's when many dancers come together to learn a piece together. Once i have done both of these, i will try to teach a class at a dance studio.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

The best method to reach my goal of completing thirty hours is to stay organized. I plan make a schedule and plan out the amount of hours I need to meet my goal. I also plan to be consistent in order to complete my hours on time. By creating a schedule, I can clearly see how many hours I am completing a day. It will also keep me motivated and focused on my goal.

3.  And explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.

I believe this will personally help me go in depth with my topic because i will be closer with the dance community. Also i will become more comfortable with my body as i will be doing several types of dance styles.

September Extra Post

hey i actually lead a class!

Dancing as my project is a lot of fun because its something i love to do. This month consists mostly of taking classes my mentor has given me and teaching me the ways of teaching a class. it can be rather hard because you need to know the counts perfectly of the routine you are teaching in order for your groups of learners to learn from you well. On saturday a choreographer came to my dance company to teach us a routine and at the end of the class, we are split into groups to show how well you can do the piece he taught us and i was asked to lead two groups! It was nerve wracking and exciting at the same time. It was a great experience for me for i learn how to take on leadership when i dance.

This is my teammates and i doing the piece together. I am the one with the white shirt on.

Blog 4: Interview Preparation

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  Why?

I Plan to Interview Michael Bailey, my dance director in my dance company. Reason for interviewing him is because he is the founder of a dance company so he knows a lot about the dance community and the answers to my questions.

2.  You have to ask 5 questions.  What additional questions do you plan to ask?  Ask open-ended questions.

1. What inspired you to persuade dancing after school years?

2. How did you come up with the dance company Marvels?

3.Whats your favorite style of dancing? and why?

Blog 3: Topic Choice and Working EQ

1.  List your topic here:

Performing Arts (Dance)

2.  Write a question that helps to focus your research this month.

What Style of dance style does the public prefer?

Summer Mentorship Component

1. (Know) Using google doc (drive) link a log of specific hours and a description of your duties

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AptFIfmEyhugdHFVRmZ2elJGTVh3Tzdwem5MVHZ2Wmc&usp=sharing

2. What is the contact name & number of where you volunteered?

Name: Angel Barajas  Phone Number: (562) 215-9127

3. (Need to know) What questions were raised because of the 10 hours of experience?  List them.

1. Is class a way to express your emotions with others through dancing?
2. Why is it more expensive to take a class of ballet then hip hop?
3. Is it a good thing to have your kid dance a lot at a young age?

4. What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?

I think what i gained the most is that choreography isn't just about different sets of moves and patterns but emotional and unique. Everyone has their own choreo in their heart and everyone has a different pattern to go by when it comes to dancing, which is amazing.

5. What is your senior project topic going to be?  How did what you did help you choose a topic?  Please explain.

Im going to stay with Performing Arts. The reason for this is because dancing is my passion and it would be exciting to learn more and go more in depths  with something i really like to do. Teaching and assisting class at dellos helped me choose this topic because it gave me an insight of what being a teacher and choreographer is like, and it is very exciting yet sometimes troublesome for sometimes you get stuck with your next move in your choreography.

2.   What questions do you have that haven't been answered about the senior project? This can be about the senior project in general, any components or about a presentation topic you saw or what they said.
i think everything that i was curious about senior project has been covered. I just wanted to know is there a step by step process we need to accomplish throughout the project or is it just like periodic check ups?

3. What has the most important part of the senior project based on what you are seeing in the 2-hour presentations?
knowing everything there is about your topic. All the good presenters i remember knew their topic like the back of their hand and made it seem they wanted us to learn all about it in a enthusiastic way.

4. What topic are you considering doing and why?

Either Dance or Medicine. The reason for dance is because it is my current passion and i love to dance more than anything. I would do medicine because it is the career i want to follow and it would benefit me if i started learning about it early.

5. What are you doing for your summer mentorship?
If it is for dance i would do audition for a new Dance Company and see if the director would mentor me like he does with the rest of the team. For medicine i would see if i could do mentorship with my mom's best friend who is a current doctor.
